Low cost airlines from london to new york

Despite its initial promise, the concepts of low cost transatlantic travel all but disappeared with the death of the Laker Airways in the 1980s. For over thirty years, passengers did not have any low cost options when it came to travelling from the Britain to the US. However, after the success of its New YorkBangkok route from its Scandinavian bases in the year 2013, the Norwegian airlines is planning to fulfil the promise offered by the Laker Airlines by introducing low cost flights from the Gatwick airport to New York in the summer of 2014.

Industry experts claim that the development is expected to revolutionize and transform the extremely lucrative market and with a one way ticket costing just £149 pounds, more and more passengers are expected to make the journeys. Norwegian plans to use the Boeing Dreamliner on the route as it is one of the best airlines when it comes to fuel savings and reduction in fuel charges.

Moreover, the airline doesn’t just plan to offer passengers with access to low cost flights and negligible services. The route is expected to have a basic degree of comfort which shall include a variety of in-flight entertainment options included in the ticket fare. However, passengers shall have to pay an extra £30 for the subtler aspects of flying such as meals, pre-reserved seating and baggage allowance. The airline initially plans to roll out three services per week to New York and two services per week to Fort Lauderdale and Los Angeles from the month of July. All ticket fares for these sectors are also expected to be below £200.

According to the executives from Norwegian, the airline enjoys a unique position which shall allow it to succeed in the low cost markets and the Dreamliner should also help it to reduce fuel costs by as much as 20%. This shall enable the airline to tap into the UK – US market, one of the most lucrative sectors for the airline industry.

The move comes despite the fact that other airlines such as Virgin Atlantic and British Airways have discontinued the London Gatwick – New York sector after deeming it to be nonviable. Industry insiders believe that the London Gatwick is the ideal airport for such a service as it is known to host numerous feeder flights and is also known to have one of the largest European air networks. This should help offer Norwegian with an increased number of transfer opportunities.

The entire industry is awaiting the launch of this low cost transatlantic route with great anticipation as its success should be able to trigger a plethora of destinations into the network such as Barcelona, Split, Malaga, Copenhagen, Faro and Majorca. Moreover, it should also offer passengers with an excellent alternative to the Virgin Atlantic and British Airways flights that operate from the London Heathrow and charge much higher airfares.
