Founded in the beginning of the 17th century, Albania’s capital Tirana is a relatively new European capital. It lived through a time of suppressive dictatorship, and only in recent years has it started to carve out an identity to show to the world. The National Historic Museum is the country’s premiere museum and the best place to get one’s bearings both historically and culturally. Visiting the Tirana Mosaic, one learns that in fact the area has been inhabited for thousands of years. The modern expression of Albania is linked with its modern face, and Piramida is a symbol. Although it’s falling apart, the Pyramid’s International Centre of Culture remains a central Tirana location. However, the greatest symbol of Tirana is the Clock Tower, built in 1820. The Et’hem Bey Mosque was built just a year later, and survived the brutal communist dictatorship years. In the Blloku area, the dictator, Enver Hoxha, had his residence. This also happens to be the best area for cafes, shopping and nightlife. One strange thing that must be unique in the world is Bush Street, named in honor of the recent US president who visited in 2007. The Tirana International Airport is serviced by a number of airlines. Among them are Belle Air, British Airways, Austrian Airlines, Adria Airways, Alitalia, Turkish Airlines and Olympic Air.
