London Stansted Flights Guide
The capital of England is served by a number of airports. Gatwick is larger than Stansted, and Heathrow is the main air transit hub for London and its surrounds. However, Stansted has seen steady growth since its founding as an RAF base during the Second World War.
Stansted is located to the northwest of London. It is the main hub of low-cost airlines. Ryanair is the largest carrier, and Stansted is its largest base. Other airlines that have service out of Stansted are EasyJet, Thomas Cook Airlines, Thomson Airways, Travel Service Airlines, Titan Airways, Air Berlin, Austrian Airlines, Belle Air, Air Moldova, Pegasus Airlines, Germanwings, Freebird Airlines and a few more.
Most travelers arrive and connect to London via the Stansted Express, a dedicated rail line for the city. Several bus companies also serve the airport-London City route.
The airport is located in Stansted Mountfitchet, a small town of not more than 6,000 residents. Unlike many towns that play host to large airports, there are a number of interesting things to see in Stansted Mountfitchet.
It was Saxon before the Norman invasion. The Mountfitchet Castle and Norman Village speak to that most important of English historical events. Also in town is a functional 18th century windmill, and the House on the Hill Toy Museum, touted as the largest of its kind on the planet. All in all, a layover in Stansted could be an educational experience.
