Nuku Alofa Flights Guide
The Pacific Island nation of Tonga is located a thousand kilometers north of New Zealand, tucked into a space shared by Fiji and Samoa. Nuku’Alofa is the capital city, and sits on the coral island of Tongatapu.
As a small nation, Tonga’s capital is not filled with sites. Many come to experience the coral reefs with diving companies, or they head north to other islands in the archipelago. Within the city however, there are a number of things to see. The Royal Palace, for example, is where the king of the Tonga Monarchy resides. It is built entirely of wood, and the tropical, humid climate has caused its slow dilapidation. At the Talamahu Market, local commerce finds expression in the commotion of the country’s largest food market scene. There are many diverse fruits that one cannot find elsewhere. For a bit of information on national culture, the Tongan National Cultural Center provides; however, the best way to relive the island’s history is by visiting Mu’a to see the tombs of ancient kings, or by visiting the Ha’amonga ‘a Maui trilithon in the north. For the best snorkeling, the city harbor is not good; instead, visitors ferry to the island of Pangaimotu.
The Fua’amotu International Airport is served by Air New Zealand, Virgin Australia, Fiji Airways and Chathams Pacific Airways for inter-island flights.
