Hilo Flights Guide
Hilo shares a history with the rest of the Hawaiian archipelago that involves the myths and legends of the Polynesian kings. Hawaii eventually went to the United States, a transition that sparked the mainlanders’ insatiable curiosity. Hilo is the entry point for and largest city on the Big Island.
Hilo might be one of the main transit points for many American tourists but it has sites that pay tribute to a kingly past. The King Kamehameha Statue is located in the Wailoa State Park, and exists to remember the king who came closest to uniting the Hawaiian Islands and their people. The Naha Stone is located in Hilo as well, which tells the legend of the latter king. Other cultural sites in Hilo include the Hilo Art Museum, the Pacific Tsunami Museum and the Lyman House Museum. Not far from town are Rainbow Falls, a pleasant natural falls that substitute for the greater Akaka Falls for those who don’t want to make that more arduous journey. Hilo is also where one goes to see the rivers of lava on Mount Kilauea, in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. A daytime hike offers views over Mauna Kea also, which from sea bottom to land summit is the biggest mountain on earth.
Hilo International Airport is served by go!, Hawaiian and United Airlines.
