Harare Flights Guide
Known as Salisbury up until 1982, Harare is the capital of the South African country of Zimbabwe, and has an estimated population of around 1.6 million residents. It’s considered a metropolitan city and is home to the University of Zimbabwe, which is the country’s biggest learning establishment. Harare is also Zimbabwe’s cultural, industrial, financial and communications center, as well as being a trade hub for products like cotton, citrus, maize (corn) and tobacco.
Top attractions in and around Harare include stunning safaris (one of the best ones being Varden Safaris), animal sanctuaries (such as Wild is Life Trust, Animal Sanctuary and the Kuimba Shiri Bird Sanctuary), the Lake Chivero Recreational Park, Mukuvisi Woodlands (a popular nature/wildlife area), and the National Botanical Gardens (which is a great place for picnicking, reading, or just relaxing). There are other great things to do in this city, such as the National Gallery of Zimbabwe that showcases African art and offers a nice souvenir shop, the Chapungu Sculpture Park (a favorite spot among natives and tourists, this park features Zimbabwean Shona sculptures), and the lovely Harare Gardens.
Be sure to sample some of Harare’s traditional South African cuisine at one of its several restaurants, such as Shop Café, where tourists and residents enjoy a great lunch, or Victoria 22 which offers stunning scenery and fine cuisine (try the Scottish salmon or fresh New Zealand mussels). Carriage Halt Restaurant is another great dining choice with lush surroundings and an innovative menu, and offers both lunch and dinner.
There is some shopping venues in Harare, including the Eastgate Centre, Mbare Market, Doon Estate (this newer shopping center features a shop called Art Mart that has dozens of works of art from local artists), and the Avondale Flea Market.
Getting around Harare is fairly simple; there are buses and commuter trains, plus minibuses (now known as commuter omnibuses), and the Harare International Airport.
