Armenia’s “Pink City” is also its largest, and it is the capital of the country. Of its many accolades, the fact that it is said to be the longest continuously-inhabited city in the world is most revealing of its character. Armenians are friendly, and are open to helping visitors discover their city. When the Soviets took over, their architect had it in his mind to create a perfectly-designed city. Republic Square was reconstructed, surrounded on one side by neo-classical buildings and on the other by modern soviet interpretations. From the square, Northern Avenue flows through an area of modernist constructions that house new shopping outlets. The avenue terminates at Freedom Square and the iconic Opera House, which is a second beating heart of Yerevan. Where the Cafesjian Museum begins, so does the city’s most recognized stairwell. It is supposed to mimic the hanging gardens of Babylon, climbing to a great height and trailing the artwork of Sculpture Park and “cascades” in its wake. There are much more to see. The city is filled with art and historical museums, churches and the Armenian-style St Gregory Cathedral, parks including the Singing Fountains, and the founding location of the city at the millennia-old Erebuni Fortress.
