Ankara Flights Guide

5 million people live in the capital of Turkey, Ankara. It is located in the center of the country, away from the Black Sea and Mediterranean coasts. It was a small town based around the castle before the current republic was established in the beginning of the 20th century, but today it has grown into the modern expression of Turkish ambition. The revered nationalist Ataturk established the republic, and Ankara has served as the hub of government ever since. The most popular attraction in the city is Antikabir, Ataturk’s mausoleum. Some might call it a pilgrimage site. Before visiting the beautiful old town, the Museum of Anatolian Civilization, which houses artifacts and contextualizes local history in a very helpful way, is a good first step. Once one has the background information about Ankara, one can better appreciate the beauty of the Hamamonu old town and the towering Ankara Castle. City landmarks are old (Haci Bayram Mosque, Column of Julian the Apostate, Temple of Augustus), and new (Atakule Tower, Ulus and Republican Ankara). The most dominant feature of the skyline is the Kocatepe mosque, but one of the oldest places in the city is the Roman bath. Many come to move on to regions like Cappadocia, but if they give the city a chance they’ll discover its rewards. Esenboga International Airport serves the city. Borajet, Pegasus and Turkish Airlines handle the bulk of flights, while several other carriers also have schedules to Ankara.
