Alexandria Flights Guide
Egypt’s ancient capital city owes its beginnings to its namesake, Alexander the Great. Through a history of shifting power bases, intellectual advancement and architectural splendor, Alexandria has forged a strong identity rooted in the visible development of mankind.
The Library of Alexandria and the Lighthouse of Alexandria might no longer exist, but their grandeur contributed to the reputation of the city, and today many other sites worthy of visitors’ attention cleave renown from their ancient brothers. Although it is a bustling metropolis of 3.5 million people, Alexandria identifies not with modern expansion but with such sites as the beautiful white Citadel of Quaitbay, the Cemetery of Mostafa Kamel and the ruins of the ancient Roman Theater. Pompey’s Pillar has stood since 297, while the Kom el-Shouqafa is an area of catacombs and underground tunnels that has existed since before the city’s Greek founder. All of Alexandria’s historical marvel, including the more recent El-Mursi Abul-Abbas Mosque, can be best contextualized at the Alexandria National Museum. To relax the mind, Alexandria’s Mediterranean beaches offer a clean getaway from the commotion.
The Alexandria International Airport is served primarily by EgyptAir, but has recently been closed for work. Many might choose to fly into Cairo and tour the country from the south.
