Aleppo is the biggest of Syrian cities, and has sat at the crossroads of great cultural changes since written history began. Alexander the Great came through here, as did the Persian Empire. It has seen the Romans, the Byzantines, the crusaders, and the Ottoman Empire. Now, Aleppo is seeing new change in the form of a modern-day civil war, and the city is a hub of the opposition. There is a war and no one is visiting Aleppo. However, when things calm down once more, these are the sites of interest in the city. The city’s most admirable architectural wonder is the Citadel. Hill structures have dated from 300 BC but the fortress that now occupies the land was constructed by the crusaders in the 13th century. Outside of the city is the Saint Simeon’s Basilica. It is a religious site dedicated to the hermit who gave it its name. Back in the city, the Souq market area is one of the liveliest areas in the city. One will remark on the calls to prayer, and though there are numerous mosques to visit, the Great Mosque is the most beautiful one, and provides a perfect conclusion to a tour of Aleppo. The Aleppo International Airport serves the city. The war has closed the airport indefinitely. Syrian Air Airlines used this airport as a secondary hub after Damascus, and several other carriers had flights scheduled.
