Why fly to Munich?

It is home to fantastical castles and beer for breakfast. What's not to love? Munich is a beautiful city with some of the loveliest parks and buildings you will see in the country. The capital of Bavaria is located on the Rivar Isar and is flanked by the Alps.

The city is home to some of the most important museums and galleries in the world. The Deutsches Museum is one of the oldest and houses exhibitions that provide deep insight into many studies like paleontology and botany. Galleries include the Pinakothek der Moderne, Kunstareal and Glyptothek to name just a few. It is quite easy to get lost in the fascinating past while in Munich.

Visit the National Theatre to view the opulent inside, this is where Richard Wagner premiered many of his world famous operas. From beautiful buildings to beer gardens now.

The Hofbrauhaus am Platzl is where the Oktoberfest festivities are based, but is open year round. Bavarian beer is famous, especially Weissbier, and the city itself is home to numerous breweries. You can enjoy your pint with some of the delicious food offerings like Obatzda which is a combination of Camembert and onions, perhaps some grilled trout and radish. Germany is famous for its varieties of sausage, each region in the country often has its own specialty. When in Munich try the white sausage (which is definitely tastier than it sounds).

The city has a great nightlife scene and attracts some of the best DJs and performers from around the world. If you are looking for a great night out any day of the week you can head to Kunstpark which has music to suit every taste from electro to hip hop.

From beautiful architecture to a boisterous atmosphere and a cuisine you can sink your teeth into, Munich is a charming city to visit and will stay with you like a great dream so take as much of it in while you're there.

Weather

Munich is supremely cold in the winter and lovely during the summer. Temperatures in the summer months are in the mid 20s, however, this is also the wet season so the heat and moisture cause a level of humidity. During the winter the numbers drop into the minuses and the snowfall begins. The city's location near the Alps means winter can come earlier than the traditional winter months and last a little longer than the typical winter season suggests. As a result, the spring and fall are full of weather surprises.

When to fly to Munich

Peak season

The holiday crowds love summer in Munich and that means flight ticket prices are high beginning in June through to the first week of September. Oktoberfest takes place in the month of the same name, and brings in tens of thousands of party revellers from around the world, which means unless you plan early you will pay a hefty flight price to travel at that time.

Off season

January and February are not particularly hot travel months for Munich so this means flight prices are at a friendly low. November travel is also not a bad idea as the weather is cooler but not freezing cold and flight prices have not hit their December peak.

Getting into Munich

Insider Guide

  • Visit Neus Schloss Herrenchiemsee, this castle was the pride of Ludwig II. I thouses the Great Hall of Mirrors which lead lead into opulent rooms inspired by Versailles. Take a tour around the gardens for a bit of green and relaxations.
  • Take a stroll through the Englischer Garten, this is a gorgeous urban park located in central Munich and is a great way to get out of the city, in the city. The park has a lake and you can rent a boat and do some rowing or simply take a picnic and enjoy the fresh air.
  • Munich is home to a number of professional sports teams, the most famous of which is likely football champions Bayern Munich. If you have a chance, take in a game and be prepared to get loud and rowdy.
  • Visit the contemporary cousin of the Pinakothek museums. the Brandhorst Museum houses modern works by Andy Warhol and other modern day artists. Despite the numerous museums dedicated to the works of early artists, Munich is also moving forward with its appreciation for modern works and houses a fine collection of them in this museum.
