Why fly to Louisville?


It is home of one of the biggest sporting events to take place in the whole of the United States.

Louisville turns into one big massive party for two weeks prior to the Kentucky Derby, which takes on the first Saturday in May. The Kentucky Derby Festival includes a massive fireworks display as well as parades and numerous other events. Regardless of when you visit the city remember to try the official drink of the derby, the mint julep.

Besides the premier derby, there are a ton of things to do in this bubbling city. The city has a thriving cultural scene with numerous venues kneading art growth in the city. Head to the West Main District in the city center to get your fill of museums.

The Speed Art Museum, Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft and the Frazier History Museum arer all located here. A number of galleries are also located in the area.

Visit Old Louisville in the south for a taste of the Victorian era. Here you will see period architecture throughout the neighborhoods. There are numerous mansions and homes that have been maintained so well that you could have easily rolled back 100 years.

One of the most fascinating things to see in Louisville is the underground cavern. The Louisville Mega Cavern is 17 miles of underground adventure. You can take a tram trip through the strip with a guide and learn all about the rock formations and also about the area that was going to be used as a bunker during the Cuban missile crisis.

In addition to the numerous places you can tour, you are probably going to want to pick up a few souvenirs and a great place to do that is at the Butchertown Market. This little place is chock full of boutiques that sell gourmet foods and lovely all-natural bath products as well as other locally-produced goods.

Louisville is chock full of fun and no matter the time of year you travel you will always have a ton of things to do, if you visit during Halloween time be sure to take in the haunted Waverly Sanitorium.


Louisville Weather


Summers are hot in Louisville with numbers in the low 30s. The winter temperatures dip significantly to the negative 10s and snow and sleet are common. The city receives a sprinkling of rain throughout the year with summers receiving slightly more than the rest of the year. There is a risk of tornadoes in the region.


When to fly to Louisville


Peak Season

The Kentucky Derby Festival means booking your flight for April or the beginning of May will cost you a pretty penny as this is a hugely popular time to visit the city. Additionally, Louisville is hot in the summer but this is also when a lot of fun events take place, which means tourist numbers go up. The high traffic into the city also makes for high flight ticket prices.

Off Season

From November through to April Louisville becomes a cold, wet and sometimes snowy place which reduces the numbers of tourists heading to the area. October is a good month to book a flight to Louisville as you will find yourself with a good deal on flight ticket prices just before the very cold, wet weather begins. The first three months of the year are also a good time to travel and will garner you some good deals.


Getting into Louisville


Your portal into the lovely city of Louisville opens up at the Louisville Airport. From the airport you have a number of choices when it comes to ground transportation. You can use the public transit buses to get you into the city. Additionally, many of the area hotels offer free shuttle services for their guests so check on that option before you book your stay. Taxis are available outside of the airport terminal as are limos if you want to make your trip in style.


Getting around Louisville


Your main form of public transportation will be public transit buses which can get you around the city. There is also a quaint trolley car service in the touristic downtown core. If you are planning on traveling outside the city center it would be best to rent a vehicle.

  • Let the world's largest bat guide you to the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory. Louisville Slugger's are the diamond standard in bat making and at the museum and factory you'll learn all about the history of the company and also get a chance to see how bats are made. In fact, you can also have a bat made with your name on it. The facility also houses bats belonging to some of the best players in history. You want to rub one for good luck and then head to the batting cages for some batting practice.
  • Visit Condrad-Caldwell House Museum for a taste of the Victorian era. This old Victorian mansion is kitted out with period furnishings. You will have a guide who will take you through each of the floors and tell you about the history of the home and what exactly some of those unusual items you will were used for.
  • Visit the Muhammad Ali Center and learn about one of the greatest boxers in the world. The two floors house numerous exhibits abou the Louisville native as well as civil rights at the time he was becoming a star. The space also hosts two art galleries and you will be shown plenty of old footage documenting the life and times of Muhammed Ali as well as all of the historical events that took place during the peak of his boxing career.
  • If you are in the city during Christmas time, visit the Lights Underground spectacular at the Louisville Megacavern. You can drive right into the cavern and tour the lit up sight. It is truly a sight to behold.
