WestJet Flight Guide

WestJet History

The Canadian carrier WestJet is a relatively new carrier, founded only in 1996. It has grown into the second largest airline in the country, second only to Air Canada. Today, WestJet serves a growing customer base, offerings flights on a regular schedule as well as seasonal charters.
WestJet operates some 11 planes, which includes its subsidiary, flying to some 88 destinations within Canada and abroad. Although the airline is headquartered in Calgary, its main operating base is located at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

WestJet Flights

Why fly WestJet?

WestJet is not a member of any global alliance; however, it does have a strong reputation for quality customer service. The airline might be newer on the scene of carriers in North America, but it is already the 9th largest in the region.
The main incentive to fly with WestJet is its WestJet Rewards program, which is the company’s frequent flyer program that is offered to customers. This loyalty program functions not with “miles” but with “WestJet Dollars”. However, this in-house currency has the same general function that “miles” do. One gains these dollars with every real dollar spent, and depending on the class of cabin and distance of the flight, they receive WestJet Dollars. These can be used to purchase tickets, get seat upgrades, buy merchandise on the website and use at a number of partnership third-party locations.

WestJet Flight Destinations

WestJet flies to locations within North American and the Caribbean. Its main destinations are concentrated domestically and in the United States. A number of cities throughout Mexico are also served. WestJet flies to the Bahamas, Antigua and Barbuda, Bermuda, Aruba, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, several cities in Cuba, Curacao, the Dominican Republic, Turks and Caicos, Puerto Rico, Sint Maarten, Saint Lucia and one country in Europe: Ireland.
The above includes all the subsidiary flights by WestJet Encore. In addition, the company has a number of codeshare agreements with other airlines, allowing its passengers to get onward flights aboard non-WestJet planes. These airlines include Japan Airlines, Air France, China Southern Airlines, British Airways, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, KLM, Korean Air and others.

On Board WestJet

WestJet planes are all equipped with personal television screens embedded in each seat. This equipment comes installed with the LiveTV television network. This allows passengers to watch live TV from such channels as CBC, ABC, CTV and others. All the information about the flight can also be accessed, including a map of the route. The airline provides some complimentary snacks and drinks, but the main program that WestJet utilizes is a program wherein passengers can purchase things onboard.

Business Class Flights

WestJet does not have a traditional Business Class. Instead, they have Plus seats, which are located in the first three rows of some of the aircraft. Other aircraft are single-class configurations. However, these seats are available to those who have the correct tickets, and offer not only full complimentary food and drink (not meals), but additional leg room to stretch out.

WestJet Lounges

WestJet operates a number of generic airport lounges for its passengers. These are not reserved for the Plus ticket passengers; instead, all passengers flying on WestJet planes have the option of purchasing a single-entry pass. These are called “partner lounges” and are located in a number of Canadian terminals and two locations at the Sangster International Airport in Jamaica.

WestJet’s website is located at The airline is in the process of evolving its seating options, so anyone interested in flying with them would do well to check periodically back on the website for updated services.
