US Airways Flight Guide

US Airways

US Airways History

US Airways has been around for a number of decades, offering premium and standard domestic service to a population that more and more shuns the highways for the airways. The airline was founded in 1937 as All American Aviation and later became US Airways in 1996. Since that time, the airline has grown into a fleet of 343 main aircraft with an additional 278 planes operated by its subsidiary company, US Airways Express. The latter carriers serve a large network of smaller airports, bringing the total number of destinations that US Airways serves to 193. US Airways operates out of 4 hub cities, with its main hub at the Charlotte/Douglas International Airport in North Carolina, and the company HQ in Tempe, Arizona.
The most relevant piece of information in the recent history of US Airways is the planned merger with American Airlines in December of 2013. American Airlines is another major carrier in the United States, and this merger will result in an airline that overshadows the recent agglomeration between Continental and United Airlines, thus making the new venture the largest airline in the world. When the merger is complete, the resulting company will be run from American Airlines’ HQ in Fort Worth, Texas.

US Airways Flights

Why fly US Airways?

US Airways has the experience that makes it one of the safest airlines to fly. Its staff is very helpful and patient in all circumstances, and check-in is smooth and friendly. Although US Airways does not fly to as many destinations as United Airlines, through their subsidiaries and codeshare agreements, customers can enjoy a smooth transition to another airline on the same journey. US Airways has an extensive network of codeshare agreements, including some 25 global airlines, allowing connections with many more destinations in addition to the mainline and subsidiary locations.
US Airways operates a frequent flyer program called Dividend Miles. Like other airlines’ programs, this one functions as a measure of miles flown and class of seat acquired. The miles that one earns can later be redeemed and spent towards upgrades, gifts and new flights.

US Airways Flight Destinations

US Airways has its 4 main hubs at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. US Airways flies to many of the United States’ major metropolitan hubs, including a number along the west coast. The bulk of the airline’s operations, however is focused on the East Coast, the Southwest and to a plethora of Caribbean Island nations. It offers seasonal charters in addition to regular schedules. Codeshares and subsidiaries allow US Airways to connect with United in order to expand its destinations to include many more cities in the Midwest and the Rockies. US Airways is also known for its hourly flights along the Eastern Seaboard between such main cities as New York, Boston and Washington. In addition, US Airways provides several flights to overseas destinations in South America, Asia and Europe.

On Board

US Airways offers its patrons comfortable economy class seating that competes with the other airlines by providing over 30 inches of space. Once aboard a US Airways flight, one receives complimentary drink and snack box service. On the longer flights, meals are available for purchase. Also available for purchase are spirits and wine, and the offerings of in-flight merchandise changes regularly. On international flights to South America and across the Atlantic, economy class is presented with complimentary meal service, with an option to upgrade to a premium meal.
As per entertainment onboard, US Airways uses the GoGo Inflight Internet on select aircraft, as well as streaming videos. This is not a free option, and it is not currently offered on international routes. However, each flight comes equipped with the standard media player in the arm rest, which includes a selection of channels that play any of a number of various genres of music or talk show media.

Business Class Flights

First Class seating is available on shorter flights with domestic destinations, and on a few flights that travel internationally. If flights last longer than three and a half hours, meals are provided. The seats in first class are wider, and allow for a greater degree of recline than those found in the economy class.
On longer international flights, the first class seating is called ‘Envoy’. These seats are fully reclining on some craft, and otherwise reach to a comfortable 165 degrees on others. The seats feature a swiveling personal monitor for On-Demand movies and television, with a wealth of music choices as well. There are power outlets for charging electrical devices, and the food, alcohol and soft drink service is completely complimentary.

Lounges

US Airways operates a comprehensive network of airport lounges that provide their customers with the relaxing break from travel that often they want and deserve. These lounges come stocked with complimentary drinks and snacks, comfortable chairs, television and personal bathroom. There are 19 lounges that belong to the US Airways Club, but members have the added perk of access to United’s lounges and a number of others as well including those of the Star Alliance and Air Canada.

Website

The website of US Airways can be found at www.usairways.com. Here, one can book tickets, check-in, plan their seating arrangements and check on their flight status. In addition, one can download the US Airways app, check on new deals that come out exclusively on the homepage of the site, and subscribe to the US Airways newsletter, which comes packed with deals of the season.
