Singapore Airlines Flight Guide
Singapore Airlines History
Singapore ranks among the very few and very exclusive 5-star airlines in the world. This title is roughly equivalent to the idea of 5-star hotels. The service is impeccable, the planes are lavish, and the offerings are many.
Singapore Airlines has been in existence since the end of the Second World War. Today is boasts some 103 planes and 62 different destinations. Although small compared to other global carriers in terms of planes and destinations, Singapore Airlines is one of the largest on the planet in terms of revenue. One of the considerations to take to heart is the fact that the company also owns several smaller carriers who engage in the budget travel economic sector, thus expanding their influence into that market. Singapore Airlines has its hub at Singapore Changi Airport, the main airport of the country.
Why fly Singapore Airlines?
There are a number of reasons why it is good to fly with Singapore Airlines. Price is not usually the reason one chooses to fly with them. They have impeccable service that spares no expense to make the experience of one’s flight a truly comfortable and enjoyable experience.
The frequent flyer programs on offer through Singapore Airlines are comprehensive. The first program is called KrisFlyer, and since Singapore Airlines is a member of the Star Alliance, these translate into the Silver and Gold programs, all of which have miles that are transferable between the different carriers. This program is also shared by the main subsidiary company, SilkAir. Passengers fly and accumulate miles which can then be converted to new tickets, upgrades, hotel stays and car rentals, etc.
For those passengers who fly in Business Class and above, there is a different program altogether, which is called the Priority Passenger Service. Those passengers with this membership get added perks which include top priority check-in, in addition to guaranteed seats in economy if they cannot attain a seat in the higher class seating sections.
Singapore Airlines Flight Destinations
Singapore Airlines has traditionally served the region, and especially that of Australia, accounting for a large percentage of all flights to Down Under. Most regional economic hubs are served by Singapore Airlines, including several locations in Indonesia and Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. Taiwan, Japan and China are also served. Singapore Airlines flies also to many cities in India, several in Pakistan, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Cairo, South Africa, Istanbul, Greece, and the main economic powerhouses in Europe. Flights arrive also to Sao Paulo, New York, Boston, Houston, LA and San Francisco.
Through the company’s subsidiaries Scoot and SilkAir, many smaller destinations can be reached. In addition, the airline also runs codeshare agreements with over 24 different airlines. These agreements allow one to fly with two separate airlines on the same ticket. Some of the carriers with agreements are Swiss International Air Lines, Ethiopian Airlines, Aegean Airlines, Lufthansa, Garuda Indonesia, Virgin, EgyptAir, All Nippon Airways, Air Canada, Air India, US Airways, LOT Polish and several more.
On Board Singapore Airlines
The economy class on several of the airline’s aircraft is somewhat outdated, but where they falter in that regard, they make up for in service provided. Newer flights sport economy class seating that offers much more room than the average airline. There are also footrests and adjustable headrests, as well as wide LCD screens. Economy class comes with power outlets, USB and sometimes iPod ports.
The award-winning service speaks to the airline’s promise of quality. The free meals on longer flights are complemented by a wide array of free drinks and snacks as well. The entertainment system on newer craft is top-of-the-line, complete with indexed databases of select films, television and more for in-flight distraction.
Business Class Flights
Business Class is where Singapore Airlines really shines. The seats are made of smooth, brown leather, and they can be adjusted to lay flat. The television is large and set in place right in front of the seat. There are a number of outlets and ports, from USB and iPod to AV and headset. The entertainment system is packed with options that cater to all tastes. Business Class is larger than other such classes so that one can be relatively sure of a place. Meals are delicious and reflect the nation to which one will be arriving. Flight attendants are known for their patience and helpfulness, making passengers feel totally comfortable.
There are also the First Class and SA Suites (which only come on the new Airbus A380). The perks are even greater for First Class flyers, with access to the exclusive lounges, extra privacy and amenities, flat bed options, inexhaustible entertainment options, on-demand meal service and more.
Singapore Airlines Lounges
The main lounge of Singapore Airlines is the SilverKris Lounge, which is for gold members of the frequent flyer program and up, in addition to Business and First-Class passengers. Clients will find these lounges in 15 different cities, and where they don’t, the Star Alliance lounges are available instead.
