Shanghai Airlines Flight Guide

Shanghai Airlines

Shanghai Airlines History

Shanghai Airlines was founded in 1985 and has since grown into a large company serving China and the southern regions. In 2010, the airline was purchased outright by China Eastern Airlines, and now is a subsidiary of that company. However, Shanghai Airlines retains its brand and flight status.
Shanghai Airlines operates some 73 aircraft that serve over 140 destinations. The main hub of the airline is of course in Shanghai, at the Pudong and Hongqiao international airports.

Why fly Shanghai Airlines?

Shanghai Airlines was once a part of the Star Alliance. When it became a subsidiary of China Eastern Airlines, it had to break off from that alliance and join SkyTeam. Despite Star Alliance’s dominance, Shanghai Airlines enjoys all the perks that come with being a member its new SkyTeam group.
The frequent flyer program is the same one that China Eastern Airlines uses, called Eastern Miles. It functions the same as other loyalty rewards programs, offering its passengers the chance to gain miles to later redeem for free tickets, upgrades, merchandise and more. SkyTeam partner airlines passengers can also accrue miles aboard Shanghai Airlines flights.

Shanghai Airlines Flight Destinations

Shanghai Airlines flies mostly to destinations within China. The total tally of domestic airports served reaches 60 plus, including Hong Kong and Macau. The airline focuses its routes in the Southeast Asian region. They fly to Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. They have service to the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Maldives.
Passengers can enjoy the SkyTeam alliance partnerships. Through these partnerships they can arrive to many other destinations. In addition, Shanghai Airlines has two codeshare agreements with third-party airlines. These include China United Airlines and Sichuan Airlines.

On Board Shanghai Airlines

Economy class seating is standard aboard Shanghai Airlines. Flight attendants offer a number of complimentary items including drinks and snacks. All offerings depend on the flight route and duration. Meals are served on long flights, and on very long flights one can expect to receive several meals, and will be able to choose between local and Western cuisine. The in-flight entertainment systems are on the seat-backs on some flights, otherwise there are drop-down screens. Movies can be viewed in a number of languages, but where domestic service is concerned, one shouldn’t expect much. In general, the economy class is considered above-average.

Business Class Flights

Shanghai Airlines has a Business Class that mirrors the offerings of its parent company China Eastern Airlines. The Business Class comes with recliner seats that offer more legroom and hip room than the economy class seats. Business Class passengers can access China Eastern Airlines lounges, and they get special treatment at check-in. Once onboard, Business Class is pampered with advanced in-flight entertainment options, a broader menu and a number of special amenities not offered to the economy passengers. The problem for many English-speaking travelers is that much of Shanghai Airlines offerings are only in Chinese.

Shanghai Airlines Lounges

Business Class passengers and qualifying members of the reward programs have special access to the airline’s lounges. The main lounge is located at Shanghai Airlines’ hub, and describes the experience of the airline as a whole. There are comfortable chairs, beverages including cocktails, wine a beer available, and a number of work stations that provide the necessary connectivity and power to get business done. Food is on offer, and the seating is comfortable—a good place to relax.

Website

Shanghai Airlines’ has its website at www.ceair.com. One can book their flight and review their miles if they are members. The website, however, is very frustrating to use, and lacks what would be useful information.
