SAS Scandinavian Airlines Flight Guide
Scandinavian Airlines History
Scandinavian Airlines was founded at the close of WWII. It is an intriguing airline for the fact that it serves as the flag carrier of three countries: Sweden, Denmark and Norway. It is also the biggest carrier of all the Scandinavian countries. Since it is the most important airline in multiple countries, its hubs reflect this. The main hub is located at the Stockholm-Arlanda Airport, with two others in Oslo and Copenhagen. A number of other minor hubs are located in Bergen, Gothenburg Trondheim and Stavanger.
The airline comprises a total of 130 planes and currently growing. These serve over 100 destinations, many of which exist in Scandinavia and are not served by other large carriers. Scandinavian Airlines is also a member of Star Alliance, the largest alliance of carriers in the world.
Why fly Scandinavian Airlines?
Scandinavian Airlines have a role as a flag carrier of some of the highest living standard countries in the world, and their service must mirror this. The planes are impeccable and very well-kept, while the attendants are friendly and accommodating to all passengers. The fact that the airline is a member of the Star Alliance is an especially attractive reason to fly with them.
The rewards program is called the EuroBonus. This frequent flyer program functions as others of its kind do. The program goes towards miles for other airlines in the SAS group, including Wideroe and Blue1. The program itself is divided into three levels of membership. One begins at Basic, then rises to Silver with the accumulation of more miles, and finally enters the elite level of Gold. Through purchases with the membership credit cards, more miles can be saved. Miles are eventually redeemed for free tickets, upgrades, merchandise and a wealth of hotel partner options. These miles can translate into purchases on other airlines as well. However, note that Norway has prohibited the use of “miles”.
Scandinavian Airlines Flight Destinations
Scandinavian Airlines flies to all of the Scandinavian countries including Norway, Denmark, Finland and Sweden. They also fly to all Western European Countries except Ireland. They have service to Latvia, Russia, Turkey, Romania, Serbia, Croatia and Greece as well. They fly also to Malta, Cyprus and Israel. Service to the US, Thailand, Japan and China is also available.
Through the partner Star Alliance airlines, most countries in the world are accessible for Scandinavian Airlines customers. The airline also has the aforementioned partner airlines through its parent SAS company. These airlines have schedules to many other smaller airports, primarily located in Europe.
Scandinavian Airlines also has a number of codeshare agreements with other airlines. Some of these include China Airlines, Aeroflot, air Baltic, Icelandair, Estonia Air, Virgin Atlantic, Rossiya, Qantas and Nextjet. Through these special arrangements, customers of Scandinavian Airlines can purchase one ticket that is flown by a different airline besides Scandinavian Airlines, thereby reaching more of the world.
On Board Scandinavian Airlines
Scandinavian Airlines have various cabin classes offered depending on the kind of plane, which is dictated by the route. Those flights that serve domestic airports and European destinations have a single economy class entitled SAS Go. The premium economy class is referred to as SAS Plus and offers a meal with the ticket in addition to more luggage and special treatment at check-in and immigration.
The seats in the economy class cabin are standard, with comfortable cushioning and adjustable recline. Scandinavian Airlines offers coffee and tea aboard every flight to all passengers. There are also many offerings on the table for things to buy, organized as the airline’s “CloudShop boutique”. Economy class passengers can also purchase food and alcohol to complement the free offerings. Those who reserve their tickets online can choose their seats before boarding, free of charge.
In terms of entertainment, there is not much on offer besides the award-winning magazine for the economy class on European flights. However, the inter-continental economy seats are equipped with personal screens in the forward seat back, and there are movies, music and other programs to choose from.
Business Class Flights
As has already been mentioned, Scandinavian Airlines does not have Business Class on flights within Europe. The equivalent is the premium economy seats. On intercontinental flights the story changes. Premium Economy seats are forward of the regular economy cabin, but they are not necessarily larger. The Business Class is a standard, modern product with wide, fully-reclining seats that can be laid nearly flat.
Business passengers receive free complimentary food and drink, including alcohol. Menus are comprehensive with a wealth of offerings, and a number of meals to choose from. Business seats have personal entertainment options in the dedicated screens, and a number of electrical hookups allow for the necessary connectivity to work.
There is still no internet offered on inter-continental flights, but on all flights within Europe, EuroBonus members and those passengers flying premium economy have free access to the internet onboard. Economy passengers must purchase their time.
Scandinavian Airlines Lounges
There are a number of lounges in the SAS network. These lounges are perfect for relaxing, eating and drinking, working and freshening up. The seating is well-kept and comfortable, away from the hectic tendencies of public terminals. There are ten SAS lounges located in Scandinavia, Europe and the US. All of the over 900 Star Alliance lounges around the world are also available to qualifying members and Business Class passengers.
Scandinavian Airlines has its website at www.flysas.com. It has all of the information one can expect to find, including flight status, booking procedures, lounge and terminal information and more. There are also many last-minute deals on the homepage.
