Malaysia Airlines Flight Guide

Malaysia Airlines

Malaysia Airlines History

Malaysia Airlines is the principle flag carrier for the Southeast Asian country of Malaysia. The country itself borders Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore, and much of Malaysia Airlines’ flight plans include its neighbors. However, the company was founded just after WWII and has since grown its brand into something that has not only put it on the map, but has garnered acclaim for its 5-star service.
Malaysia Airlines has 102 planes and flies to over 60 destinations. It is based out of the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, but the main hub is in the capital city at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. It also conducts heavy operations out of the Kota Kinabalu airport, and the airport in Kuching.
Malaysia Airlines is known for its quality service. As other airlines of its caliber, it has invested heavily into its brand, separating the more elite experience offered by the mainline from its subsidiary companies. It suffered during the economic depression in Southeast Asia, but has since regained its stature.

Why fly Malaysia Airlines?

Malaysia Airlines offers its passengers not only top-quality service on the ground and aboard their modern fleet, but also in terms of rewards. In order to cater to a diverse market, Malaysian Airlines has introduced two distinct frequent flyer programs that highlight incentives to fly with them.
The first is called Enrich. Note that Malaysia Airlines is a member of the Oneworld Alliance, and therefore its customers can profit from miles gained aboard partner airlines as well as those with Malaysia Airlines. This first program has four tiers of membership. These are Blue, Silver, Gold and Platinum (not unlike many other rewards programs). The miles gained can be redeemed for free tickets, upgrades, merchandize, hotels, car rentals and more.
The Grads frequent flyer program is aimed at students, to be precise. It functions in much the same way as a regular airlines reward program, the only difference being that it offers perks that students would be more interested in.

Malaysia Airlines Flight Destinations

Malaysia serves the Southeast Asian region, wider Asia, Australia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe. It is known for its role in the route from Europe to Australia. Malaysia Airlines also flies to New Zealand, the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea. It serves a number of cities in China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, Burma and Bangladesh. India and Sri Lanka are also served, along with Yemen, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Cairo and the main economic powerhouses of Europe. Malaysia Airlines does not fly to any country in Latin America, but a number of major cities in the United States receive Malaysia Airlines planes. Through its subsidiaries, many additional destinations count among its list.

On Board Malaysia Airlines

Malaysia Airlines counts itself among some of the best airlines in the world. This feat is not in any small part due to the wider-than-usual economy seating on all aircraft. There is an adjustable footrest, along with a headrest and a 30-inch pitch option. The personal entertainment system is installed on systems located in the seat back, with offerings of movies, programs and displays. Some aircraft do not have personal TVs, but those have drop-down screens in the aisle. Together with the complimentary offerings and the careful service offered, Malaysia Airlines’ economy class has been rated the best in the world.

Business Class Flights

The Business Class personal TVs are over twice as large as those in economy. The seating provides much more ample room to stretch out and enjoy the ride, with the ability to put the seatback down at a high angle. Meal service is on-demand, and complimentary snacks, drinks and alcoholic beverages are available at any moment.
In addition to the Business Class, there is a First Class option on the brand new Airbus A380 aircraft, the largest in the world. These planes are used only for the longest-haul flights, including those that make runs to Paris, Hong Konh and London. These First Class options present passengers with private suites and fully-reclining seats, a private bar and more. The service is top-quality, and the food selection is a very remarkable upgrade from the nearest next.
All classes on longer flights have access to the new Select 3000i in-flight entertainment system. This is a touch-screen module that comes in over a dozen languages so that all customers can independently understand their use.
One final stickler concerning Malaysia Airlines is that babies have been prohibited from flying in First Class. This is a good thing for those who can’t stand the noises, but a bad thing for those who want absolute comfort while traveling with family.

Malaysia Airlines Lounges

Malaysia Airlines’ dedicated airport lounge is called the Golden Lounge, and is available to those flying First Class and those with advanced tier memberships in the frequent flyer programs. 14 lounges are located in the following airports: Perth, Sydney, Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Penang, Singapore, Melbourne, Kuching and London. Where a lounge from Malaysia Airlines does not exist but a Oneworld partner airline’s does, passengers with Malaysia Airlines can use those lounges.

The airline’s website can be found at The website is provided in several languages. Customers can book flights and check on flight statuses, redeem their miles or check for special offers. There are explanations of the fleet, descriptions of cabin classes, reviews and more. Each destination comes with a guide as well, so that customers can read up before flying.
