Air India Flight Guide

Air India

Air India History

Although Air India was founded in 1930 and is the oldest airline in the country, it has fallen to fourth place in terms of size. However, Air India remains the principle flag carrier of India, and offers its passengers extensive routes throughout the subcontinent, the greater South Asian region, and abroad.
Air India has its main hub in Delhi, the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Its other hub is located in Mumbai at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. It also has two lesser hubs in Kolkata and Chennai, in addition to its many focus cities. Currently, an international hub is in the planning stages for Dubai.
Air India operates 99 planes with more coming in in 2014. The company flies to 90 different destinations, not including those served by its subsidiary companies Air India Express and Air India Regional. In the last ten years, new routes have been added that have marked Air India as a truly global airline.

Why fly Air India?

Air India is culturally married to its home of India. The service onboard is very good, and other airlines would be hard-pressed to top the authentic hospitality of its attendants. In addition to this quality service, the airline also boasts a number of codeshare agreements with other airlines.
The main incentive program, or loyalty program, is called Flying Returns. The airline is not a part of an international alliance; however they do share exclusive agreements with Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines, such that miles earned through Flying Returns can be redeemed for rewards on these airlines as well as Air India’s subsidiaries. The miles program functions the same as others, and in the region it is said to be one of the better ones. It was the first to come about in India. Passengers clock their miles according to ticket price, distance flown and cabin class reserved. These can later be converted into free tickets and upgrades.

Air India Flight Destinations

Air India flies mostly to domestic locations, which does not come as a surprise given the size of the sub-continent. 60 national airports are served and over 30 international locations as well. In the region, Air India flies to Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, China, Iraq, Oman, Burma and Pakistan. They also fly to Singapore and Australia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Russia, South Africa, Japan, many countries in Europe, Canada, many cities in the US, and a number of African nations.
Through the airline’s subsidiary companies, customers can reach many additional domestic and regional destinations. Air India also boasts a number of codeshare agreements which allow passengers to continue onward aboard a different airline but on the same ticket. These carriers include Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, EgyptAir, Aerofloat, Air Mauitius, Korean Air, Air Canada, SriLankan Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Kuwait Airlines, Alitalia, Swiss International Airlines, Adria Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and South African Airways.

On Board Air India

Aboard Air India flights, flight attendants are keen to offer the highest quality of service to all classes. The Economy Class seating comes with dedicated light and temp controls, drop-down television screens for in-flight movies, free alcohol and a good selection of meals that differ depending on the destination. The movies change depending on where the flights are headed, and for longer-duration flights, multiple movies are played. Economy seating is comfortable and standard.

Business Class Flights

Business Class aboard Air Indian planes is referred to Executive Class. These capsule seats are larger and more comfortable than those in economy. Their make is much softer as well. Executive passengers enjoy the added rewards of access to lounges, priority check-in and an amenity kit of various articles when aboard. In addition, there are personal televisions with movie and TV shows selections, and the complimentary menu is much more exhaustive.
First Class passengers receive the added bonus of select wines that accompany each meal. Of meals there are many to choose from, and First Class passengers decide when they wish to be served. The seats can be fully reclined to accommodate passengers who wish to lie out.

Air India Lounges

Air India has an extensive network of Airport Lounges that are available to Business and First Class passengers, as well at those high-tier rewards program members. Most of the main international destinations enjoy an Air India Lounge. Some lounges are open to all passengers who are willing to pay the entry fee. Some lounges are reserved for First Class and priority program members only.
These facilities come complete with a range of offerings. One can expect complimentary food and snacks in the standard lounges, and the more executive lounges have additional amenities ranging from showers to restaurants and complimentary alcoholic drinks. There is usually a bar in the lounges. Depending on the location, there may be a buffet, plenty of comfortable lounge chairs and sofas, television sets, private bathrooms, some suitable for families, work spaces and more.

Website

The airline’s website can be found at www.airindia.in. All of the basic information that one would expect to find is there. Booking options are available as well as flight checks and online check-in. Each service is described in full, as is the rewards program. One can also organize miles and redeem them for rewards. There is a full list of the aforementioned lounges so that one can remain well-informed about the services awaiting them on the ground.
