Austrian Airlines Flight Guide

Austrian Airlines

Austrian Airlines History

It might come as a surprise that the main national carrier of Austria, and its flag carrier at that, is actually a subsidiary of the German powerhouse Lufthansa. Nonetheless, Austrian Airlines was founded in 1957 and perseveres today as the main airline of the country.
It is based out of the capital, with its main hub at Vienna International Airport. With 73 aircraft, the airline, which is primarily operated by Tyrolean Airways, serves some 117 destinations within Europe and abroad.

Why fly Austrian Airlines?

Austrian Airlines customers enjoy the special benefits that are to be had via the relationship that the airline has with its parent organization, Lufthansa. Lufthansa, and therefore Austrian Airlines, is a member of the Star Alliance. Through this alliance, many perks can be experienced, including increased lounge access and special deals.
Another facet of Lufthansa that is shared with Austrian Airlines is the Miles & More frequent flyer program. The program is modeled after others of the kind, involving two distinct categories of miles use that are defined by the kinds of miles that one can gain on any given flight. Award miles go towards perks like free tickets and upgrades, while Status miles are used to dictate one’s membership tier.

Austrian Airlines Flight Destinations

Despite being a subsidiary of Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines flies to many international destinations in its own right. The only countries in Europe that it does not serve are the three Baltic countries, Finland, the Czech Republic and Ireland. Austrian Airlines serves Iraq, UAE, Syria, Turkey, Cyprus, Israel, Egypt and Libya. They fly across the pond to the US and Canada. They also have regular service to Russia, Kazakhstan, Japan, China, India and Thailand.
Through its membership with Star Alliance, passengers can arrive to many additional global destinations. In the same vein, the company holds a number of codeshare agreements with other airlines. These airlines include Air India, Georgian Airways, Rossiya, Ukraine International Airlines, Air Malta, Azerbaijan Airlines, Germanwings, AirBaltic, Transaero Airlines and others.

On Board Austrian Airlines

Economy class seating aboard all Austrian Airlines flights is a step up from the norm. Each seat enjoys a dedicated personal entertainment console and screen with a wealth of music, music and games to choose from. In addition, one can peruse the news, and look at images having to do with the current route information. All snacks and drinks are complimentary, and long haul flights have meals on offer.

Business Class Flights

Business Class differs depending on the type of aircraft being flown. However, in general the Business Class is a serious upgrade from economy. Specifically on long haul flights, the capsule seats can be laid fully flat at 180 degrees, allowing for the ultimate comfort to wile away the hours. The entertainment options are upgraded, with a selection of hundreds of movies that are available on on-demand. The personal monitors are each 15 inches and are controlled by touch. One also receives a special comfort kit with necessary convenience products. All food and drink is served on-demand, with an on-board chef catering to Business Class needs.

Austrian Airlines Lounges

In Vienna, there are a number of lounges that are available to different levels of members and passengers. Three separate Business Class lounges are available for those passengers with the correct ticket, as well as to other Star Alliance partner airline passengers. Where there are no Austrian Airlines lounges (the only other lounge is located in Moscow), Austrian Airlines customers can access other Star Alliance lounges.
