American Airlines Flight Guide

American Airlines

American Airlines History

American Airlines has seen some troubled times recently, having had to file for bankruptcy in 2011. However, the modern course of action that has saved the airline will also see the creation of the largest airline in the world. The merger with US Airways will take place in December of 2013, and the main headquarters will remain where American is currently located, in Fort Worth, Texas. Having bested the last century, it looks like American Airlines is destination to regain its former glory.
American Airlines has been around since 1930, and since that time it has grown into a comprehensive airline network of both domestic and international flights, serving millions of people aboard some 616 aircraft. The airline’s motto is “The new American is arriving,” which is reflective of the recent decision to merge. The airline will retain its main hubs, which include O’Hare International Airport, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, John F. Kennedy International, Miami and Los Angeles International Airports.

Why fly American Airlines?

American Airlines is a reputable airline that is not only recognizable on the domestic market but internationally as well, and not least because of its presence in Hollywood films. American Airlines is thus one of the most iconic airlines of the United States, and when it merges with US Airways, the force of its economic impact will most likely grow exponentially.
It therefore would behoove the traveler to take advantage of such perks as the AAdvantage Program. This is American Airline’s frequent flyer program, and it is one of the oldest in the country. Not only that; it is also boasts the largest membership base, and as such, the rewards and offers that come out are not few and far between but many and often. The miles that one gets, which are based on prices of flights and miles flown, can be redeemed for tickets, upgrades, merchandise, hotels and car rentals. Those who travel most will eventually become premium members, listed as AAdvantage Gold, Platinum or Executive Platinum. The perks include access to partnership programs through the airline’s alliance, OneWorld.

American Airlines Flight Destinations

American Airlines fly to most of the large American metropolises, and through subsidiaries and codeshare agreements, their customers enjoy seamless transitions to other airlines in order to access yet more destinations. American flies to almost all of the Latin American countries and to many Caribbean countries as well. They also have service to Western European nations, Japan and China, among others. The aforementioned codeshare agreements exist with over two dozen airlines, including but not limited to Air Berlin, WestJet, Qantas, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, British Airways, Fiji Airways and Iberia.

On Board American Airlines

Aboard American Airlines flights one finds a comfortable configuration of economy class seats on all domestic and international flights. American Airlines provides its clients with the buy-on-board program, which allows passengers to purchase any number of snacks, drinks and meals. Aircraft in American Airline’s fleet come equipped with audio jacks on the armrests that offer patrons a number of channels to listen too, while on longer flights the drop-down television screens in the main cabin play a complimentary movie for those who are interested.

Business Class Flights

The Business Class is much more comprehensive in terms of complimentary offerings. First, the seats are larger, more comfortable, and with ample space between them so that neighbors feel that their personal bubble remains un-ruptured. On flights that last longer than two hours, Business Class passengers receive a complimentary meal service, drinks and spirits. There is also the regular Domestic First Class, with seats that are slightly larger than those in coach. Each seat is equipped with a personal entertainment system, complete with jacks and complimentary headsets. The limited-time Flagship Suite First Class is another option on select flights. These are fully-reclining seats with a wealth of working space, and their innovative design allows them to swivel 90 degrees. These will not exist, however, beyond 2014.

There are two “Admirals Clubs”, which can be joined via a yearly membership fee. However, there are only two of these lounges—one at La Guardia in New York and the other at Washington National. These lounges offer all the perks that one might expect from an elite membership organization.
The other, more elite lounge is reserved for those first-class passengers who are traveling on scheduled flights that go overseas or that cross the whole of the continent. These are called the Flagship Lounges, and are also open to certain members of the AAdvantage programs. These lounges can be found at 4 separate airports, including JFK in New York, LAX, London–Heathrow and Chicago’s O’Hare International. They offer complimentary snacks, drinks and beautiful comfy seats in which one can lay back and enjoy the news or a movie on one of the lounge’s wide-screen television sets.
