Alaska Airlines Flight Guide
Alaska Airlines History
Alaska Airlines began in 1932 with the strange name of McGee Airways. It was rehashed as Alaskan Airways and began operations on the very day that the Allies invaded Europe in 1944, D-Day. Whether because of that intimate date overlap or not, Alaskan Airlines has been consistently rated as one of the best in North America despite only being the 7th largest in the US.
Its main hub and headquarters are in Seattle, Washington. From there it serves a large demographic of Americans and foreigners flying to some 91 destinations on its 129 planes.
Why fly Alaska Airlines?
The airline is not a part of any of the major alliances, and the benefit has been that Alaska Airlines can make its own decisions and therefore grow independently. This has allowed the company to carve out its own identity in a time when many airlines are calling the banks.
But the real incentive, besides the rave reviews of its service, is its basic Mileage Plan. This is the frequent flyer plan offered to its customers. This program is also for those members of sister airline Horizon Air, and several partner airlines that belong to Oneworld. One of the unique aspects of the program is that miles can never expire. The highest levels of membership are MVP, MVP Gold and MVP Gold 75K. There are many perks to these memberships. In addition, those clients who are residents of Alaska get privilege membership to Club 49, which offers additional benefits.
Alaska Airlines Flight Destinations
Besides Seattle, other hubs are Anchorage, LA, San Diego and Portland, Oregon. Alaska Airlines serves the entire West Coast, and its flights all over North America consist of 92 cities. Many cities and smaller towns within Alaska are also served. In addition, Alaska flies to four Hawaiian Islands.
Alaska Airlines has codeshare agreements that allow passengers to continue onward to other destinations aboard Air France, LAN, Korean Air, KLM, Emirates, Aeromexico, Fiji Airways, Qantas, Delta and others.
On Board Alaska Airlines

Starbucks coffee and other Seattle local favorites are complimentary. However, there is only a buy-on-board meal program for the economy class. There is internet available for a fee.
Business Class Flights
There is no “Business Class” aboard Alaska Airlines flights. There is only the classic economy class and the classic first class. First class passengers receive extra perks including complimentary meals, blankets, portable entertainment devices and more. The meals are fresh and hot, while the complimentary drink offerings range from soda pop to alcoholic beverages. First class is served by a dedicate crew, and have their own facilities as well. What’s more, the internet is free of charge for first-class flyers.
Alaska Airlines Lounges
Alaska Airlines operates its lounges differently from most airlines. These lounges are accessible only via a paid fee. The fee is 45 dollars for a one-time use, and 875 for a membership that will last for three years. Those who rank high in the rewards program can have the membership fee either reduced by 50% or scrapped altogether. The lounges offer all the modern convenience that is to be expected of an airport lounge.
Alaska Airlines has its website at www.alaskaair.com. It is not as flashy as some sites, but it has descriptive texts on its procedures, plans, programs and more. One should check the site regularly for special deals, although Club 49 members will receive priority e-mails concerning such deals.
