Aer Lingus Flight Guide
Aer Lingus History
Aer Lingus dates back to the year 1936, when it was founded and just a month later began flights. Today, Aer Lingus is the flag carrier of Ireland, and the name reflects the combination of the two national languages, Irish and English. Even though fellow Irish carrier Ryanair is larger, Aer Lingus is the more representative of Irish hospitality, thus the title of flag carrier.
Aer Lingus operates 47 jets that fly to 77 destinations. Its headquarters are located at Dublinís airport, which is also where its main hub is located.
Why fly Aer Lingus?
Aer Lingus was once a part of the Oneworld alliance, but pulled out in order to pursue independent programs. Ryanair has tried again and again to take over the airline, so it might behoove one to fly Aer Lingus before it becomes transformed into the low-cost bare-bones of Ryanair.
For unlike Ryanair, Aer Lingus still offers its passengers a frequent flyer program. This rewards program is called Gold Circle Club. It functions according to the same principles as other clubs of its kind. That is, passengers gain miles, and these miles dictate a membership level whereby they can receive extra benefits as Aer Lingus customers. They can also redeem miles for free tickets and upgrades, hotel deals and car rental discounts.
Aer Lingus Flight Destinations
Aer Lingus has some of the most recognizable livery: green with the emblematic Irish clover. Its livery can be seen in many countries throughout the world, but primarily within Europe. Aer Lingus flies to many destinations within France, Italy, Ireland, Portugal, the UK, Spain and Germany. They also serve half a dozen US cities as well as two Canadian cities. Their planes make it to many other European countries, including Croatia, Belgium, Finland, Turkey, Switzerland, Sweden, Latvia and many others. They also have routes into Morocco and the United Arab Emirates.
Those members of other alliances with which Aer Lingus has special codeshare agreements include British Airways, United Airlines, JetBlue Airways, KLM and Etihad Airways. Through these agreements, its passengers can continue on other airlines under one ticket.
On Board Aer Lingus
On board Aer Lingus flights, one can expect an above-average seat pitch in the economy class in addition to complimentary drinks and snacks. However, the airline operates a number of different aircraft, some of which do not come with in-flight entertainment, and some of which have no onboard complimentary food service. Some of the service is buy-on-board. It is the newer aircraft and the long-haul flights to the US and Canada that have personal AVOD entertainment systems, complimentary meal service and more.
Business Class Flights
Business Class only exists on long-haul routes; all other flights have a single-class cabin configuration. On flights with the Business Class option, one can expect fully reclining seats that can pitch to some 160 degrees. All Business seats have the AVOD on-demand movie, music and games system. There are electrical outlets, USB and iPod features. The food service is complimentary, eclectic and on-demand as well. There is also a free Wi-Fi connection. Aer Lingus has plans to make the latter service available to its entire fleet.
Aer Lingus Lounges
Aer Lingus lounges are available to Business Class passengers, Gold-level rewards program members, and certain other passengers of codeshare partner airlines. The lounges are very comfortable, with plenty of seating, food and drinks and Wi-Fi.
The Aer Lingus website can be found at www.aerlingus.com. It has deals on flights, information about cabin classes and fleet aircraft, and one can manage their frequent flyer miles as well.
