Overview


Opened in 1936, Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is the third largest in Europe and the 9th largest in the world. Located within the city limits, FRA serviced over 56 million passengers in 2011. Today, FRA is the central hub for Lufthansa.

Transfer between Terminals


Frankfurt Airport has two large passenger terminals and a smaller First Class Terminal which is used exclusively by Lufthansa. Terminal 1 is divided into concourses A, B, C, and Z and is primarily used by Lufthansa. Terminal 2 was opened in 1994, is divided into concourses D and E and is primarily used by Oneworld partners. Lufthansa operates a separate First Class Terminal near Terminal 1 for the use of its first class passengers. This First Class Terminal provides security screening and customs facilities, valet parking, restaurant, a cigar room, and bubble baths. Travelers can move between terminals with SkyLine, a people mover system which has stops at Terminal 1 AZ, Terminal 1 BC, and Terminal 2 DE. The travel time between the terminals is 2 minutes with trains arriving every 2–3 minutes during the day. There is also regular bus service between both terminals.

Transport into Town


Bus: The Frankfurt bus system services 840 bus stops in Frankfurt and surrounding areas. A bus station is located in Terminal 1, Arrivals Hall. S-Bahn: The Frankfurt subway system is known as the S-Bahn and services Frankfurt and its surrounding region. An S-Bahn station is located in Terminal 1 at FRA airport. Tram: The Frankfurt tram is the above-ground rail system servicing Frankfurt and its surrounding region. Train: There are two railway stations at the airport—one for regional trains and one for long-distance trains. Frankfurt Airport regional station (Frankfurt Flughafen Regionalbahnhof) is located in Terminal 1, Concourse B. This station provides access to the S-Bahn commuter rail lines S8 and S9. Commuter rail lines S8 and S9 depart every 15 minutes during the day. Travel time to Frankfurt Central Station is 11 minutes and to Hauptwache station 15 minutes. Frankfurt Airport’s long-distance station (Frankfurt Flughafen Fernbahnhof) is connected to Terminal 1 by a pedestrian bridge. This station is the final stop of the Cologne–Frankfurt high-speed rail line. Approximately 10 trains per hour depart in all directions. Taxi: Taxi service from FRA to Frankfurt Central Station or Frankfurt city center takes 10–15 minutes.

Airport Lounges


Terminal 1 houses 16 Airline Club lounges. El Al Luxx Lounge is located between Concourses B and C; Frankfurt Airport Club is located near Gate A9; DB Lounge Long-distance train station is on Level 2; and Lufthansa has 7 lounges in Terminal 1 near Gates B44, Z25, A26, B24, B42, C14, and C16. Lufthansa’s Welcome Lounge is located in Arrival area B, near the baggage claim. Terminal 2 hosts seven airline clubs. Air France Lounge is located between Gates D26 and D27; Cathay Pacific First and Business Class Lounge is near Gate E7; Emirates Lounge is between Gates E5 and E6; Etihad First and Business Class Lounge is near Gate E9; Iberia Lounge is across from Gates D26 and D27; JAL Sakura Lounge is near Gate D4; and Sky Lounge is located near Gate D8.

With approximately 1,365 flights every day, Frankfurt Airport hosts 107 airlines. FRA is the primary hub and base of Lufthansa, the largest airline in Europe. FRA is also the headquarters of Star Alliance, the largest global airline alliance. The four top airlines flying out of FRA are Lufthansa, Condor, United Airlines, and XL Airways Germany.

Airport Facilities


FRA is home to Airport City Mall which is located in Terminal 1, departure hall B. The Airport City Mall offers retail stores, a supermarket, and several restaurants. Wireless internet is Free for the first 30 minutes. Internet access after the initial 30 minutes costs €4.95 an hour. Child play areas are located in Terminal 1 near Gate B44 and Terminal 2 between Concourses D and E on Level 4. FRA also hosts amenities such as a hairdresser, post office, and dry cleaners.

Car Parking


FRA offers three levels of parking: Terminal parking, Business parking, and Holiday parking. Terminal Parking offers 14,000 parking spots and is located in parking garages at Frankfurt Airport. Parking at Terminal 1 is in garages P 2 and P 3, parking at Terminal 2 is in garages P 8 and P 9. The rate is  € 4.00/hour,  € 25.00/day, and € 115.00/week. Business Parking offers a separate entrance, extra-wide parking spaces, and a short walk to the check-in halls. Business Parking is located in garage P 4 at Terminal 1. Prices are € 5.00/hour, € 29.00/day, and € 145.00/week. The Holiday Parking Lot is located at the airport with a free shuttle bus to the terminals. Rates start at €49/week and you can reserve a spot online for €5 extra.
